Known as Ag Nik to its many British visitors, Agios Nikolaos is a charming resort town on the sparkling Bay of Mirabella (meaning ‘beautiful view’) on Crete’s north coast. Much of it is pedestrianised – including the main street and the area around the town’s unusual salt-water lake.

The Voulismeni Lake is connected to the harbour by a narrow channel and creates an extra waterfront on which to relax with a drink or a meze. The harbour too is well lined with eateries. Gently bustling by day, it is the place to see and be seen as night falls.

Less manic than neighbouring Malia, Agios Nikolaos nonetheless has plenty to offer visitors of all ages and is very much geared up to welcome you. There is an annual summer cultural festival, an important archaeological museum and even a little road train offering trips around town and into the surrounding countryside.

Information for getting to and from the airport

Getting to your Agios Nikolaos holidays will be easy, especially in summer. Between May and October there are direct flights, taking under four hours, from Gatwick and numerous other UK cities to Heraklion (Iraklio), the Cretan capital. In winter you will need to change planes in Athens.

Heraklion airport is not large, has few facilities and can become overcrowded in summer.  A new airport is due to open in 2015. Crete has a reasonable and inexpensive bus service. From Heraklion it is 70km, about a 90-minute ride, to Agios Nikolaos, costing €7.20 (under £6).

Taxis and hire cars are also readily available at the airport though it is often cheaper to organise your car hire before leaving the UK. Taxi fares are regulated but always agree the price before travelling. The taxi transfer from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos should cost €78 (about £64).

What are the beaches like for a holiday in Agios Nikolaos?

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and has plenty of beaches of all sorts, from long strips of golden sand to hidden coves, rocky lagoons to off-shore islets. There is something for everyone: beaches backed by boogieing twenty-somethings to those lined with little but palms. The one thing they all have in common, though, is the inviting sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Agios Nikolaos has two beaches in the town and one just outside as well as being just a few kilometres from several others.

Almiros beach is considered by most the nicest beach in Agios Nikolaos. In a protected bay about 1km south of the town, it is sandy with a gentle slope into shallow waters making it good for families. It is less busy than the town beaches and sun beds and umbrellas are readily available.

If you would rather stay in town with the beachside buzz of bars and restaurants, Kitroplateia is a bay of coarse sand in the centre of town. It gets very busy in summer but has peaceful views across the water to the Sitia Hills and in spring and autumn you will find just a few people soaking up the rays.

To get away from the Ag Nik crowds, head for neighbouring Istron Bay. A 300m beach sweeps around this bay surrounded by picturesque rocky hillsides. There is one hotel here whose residents use the beach but it is never crowded in or out of the beautifully clear blue water.

The weather in Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos has an exceptionally pleasant climate. Summers are dry with daytime highs in the upper twenties from June to September. May and October see peak temperatures in the low twenties and in April and November they hover around the 20ºC mark. Even December and January are not cold with average highs in the mid-teens but it can be wet at this time of year.
