If you can’t get enough of that big yellow circle in the sky, head on holidays to Elounda during July and August when the rays shine for up to 13 hours a day. However, even in late April you’ll still get a good dose of warmth as the mercury moves north into the low 20s and the sun stays out for a good eight hours a day. Airport and transport need to know

Heraklion is within four hours flying time of the UK and is the closest of Crete’s two international airports for All Inclusive Elounda Holidays. During the summer Heraklion airport receives many direct flights from main hubs such as Gatwick and regional airports like Leeds/Bradford, but in winter you might have to travel via Athens. The transfer time to Elounda is approximately just over an hour by road and you can rent a car at the airport or jump in one of the waiting taxis (expect to pay around €80-90). Bear in mind this journey might take longer if you’re on a holiday transfer coach dropping off at different resorts. If you catch a public bus from the airport, change at Agios Nikolaos for a connecting bus to Elounda. Once in Elounda, the local KTEL bus company offers and easy and cheap way to get around to other places of interests nearby such as Plaka and Heraklion city.

The best beaches in Elounda

The beaches in and around Elounda aren’t just famed for the lure of their sand but also a spectacular mountain backdrop that completes the perfect seaside scene. Add a choice of water sports and views of the dramatic Spinalonga Peninsula and you can see why Elounda is one of Crete’s most popular resorts. The main beach is of Blue Flag status, awarded for especially clean and clear waters and an impeccably tidy beach, so bring your snorkel and jump right in.

Best Beach for lazing on a sun lounger: Elounda’s main beach just beyond the square is the perfect place to pitch a towel and while away the hours doing absolutely nothing. This Blue Flag sandy stretch is equipped with sunbeds and parasols and a few water sports facilities if for those that can muster the energy. There are plenty of coves nearby, with diamond-clear turquoise waters ideal for snorkelling.

Best Beach for activities: The long sandy stretch of Almiros Beach just south of Agios Nikolaos has plenty of opportunities for those who like watery kicks. From water skiing to banana boat rides, this beach has it all, plus safe shallow waters for children. For waterfront relaxation and active recreation you’ll be hard pushed to find a better beach in the region that offers the best of both worlds.

Best Beach for complete isolation: On the road between Elounda and Plaka you’ll find a tamarisk-shaded stretch of coastline full of tiny coves and sandy beaches. There are both public and private beaches along the peninsula, with convenient tourist facilities such as umbrellas and sun beds. Elounda boasts great views out along the coast, and many waterfront tavernas and cafes from which to enjoy them.

Water Sports

Elounda has an excellent choice of water sports, from jet-skiing and water skiing, to windsurfing, waterskiing and sailing. Scuba-divers have a PADI-approved dive centre in the resort to take them out to a range of sites, with snorkelling also available.

Sports

The many varied hotels and apartments are well-equipped with sporting facilities, with swimming pools, gyms, tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball, mini-golf and table-tennis available. Golf can be played at the Crete Golf Club, just over half an hour’s drive.

Harbour

The hub of the resort, Elounda’s harbour is the place for a relaxing drink or dinner, as well as a spot of people-watching, whilst enjoying the scene of colourful fishing boats coming in with their catch of the day, or the sight of stylish yachts moored in the marina.

Boat Trips

One of the most popular ways to see the area, boat trips depart the harbour regularly and head out along the coast, with special trips out to the island of Spinalonga, with its Venetian fortress, and some of the region’s tranquil beaches, and hidden coves and inlets.
