Almyrida is a small pretty Crete seaside fishing village resort to the east of  the  superb bay of Souda,  facing the cape of Akrotiri about 15 miles west of Chania. Almyrida has a couple of beaches of its own and plenty more within reach. Holidays in Almirada are popular with families, couples and nature lovers.

Almirada holidays are slowly becoming more established with holidaymakers but the village still remains relatively low-key, quiet and unspoilt, with olive groves running down close to the sea. Almyrida has two beaches, with shallow water safe for children, and a windsurfing school. Many more excellent beaches and resorts are nearby and with a little effort it’s quite easy to find really quiet coves if that’s what you are after. Almyrida holiday nightlife centres on a growing but still modest selection of bars and tavernas, many of which are found by the water’s edge.

More shops and bars can be found at the busier resort of Kalives which is little more than 2 miles away around the headland and there is historic attractive Chania Town for something more sophisticated and varied.

Apart from the beaches the real delights of All Inclusive Almyrida Holidays are found in the beautiful countryside around the resort and in exploring numerous charming traditional villages with their quiet picturesque country tavernas; villages like picturesque Kambia with the chapel of Agos Nikitis, Drapanos and Vamos.

The area is full of little streams, lush hills, wild flowers, olive groves and villages that have remained untouched by mass tourism, providing walks that range from quiet strolls to more serious hikes. Walkers on holiday in Almyrida have many marked paths to explore the area with its caves and gorges like those at Saint Nikolas and Diktamo.

The tiny island of Karga in Almyrida bay is a popular boat trip. A car could be useful if you really want to get to know this rich scenic area.

However if you simply like the thought of very lazy days within the seashore, the distinct splash of water sports and evenings spent with a glass or two of sweet wine and a dish of cooked exotic fish in a pleasant nearby taverna – this is the area for you.

Backed by the vivid white Foothills and flanked by undulating hills, the main seaside is really a good-looking stretch of sandy having shallow seas where young ones may enjoy risk-free splashing around. And to avoid the severe temperature of the midday sunshine, you can easily take shelter in among the clubs next towards the beach and have fun with an ice-cold alcoholic beverages or even a refreshing iced tea.

Inland, the gorgeous countryside begs to get discovered, too. Stately cypress trees punctuate the groves of silvery-green olives, and also the rolling areas are blanketed along with multi-coloured wild blossoms in early spring. This can be wine country, and most of the homes around the villages of Gavalohori, Douliana and Aspro have ‘patetiri’ or wine press, in which the fresh grapes are stamped into service through the autumn months.

For a 24-hour period out, have a boat journey towards the compact island of Karga just a few mls out into the bay. Or head to the nearby hamlet of Plaka, which has attractive, flower-decorated houses and splendid views of the Bright Foothills. Also worth a try is the quaint little town of Kokkino Chorio, featured in the classic film ‘Zorba the Greek’. Secluded, yet along with plenty to do – come and see this gorgeous Cretan gem. After all, they do say the best things come in small packages

Almyrida (Almirida) is a delightful little town with gently shelving blue flag sandy beaches – very family friendly. Tavernas and bars line the seafront, but this is no Malia or Platanias. An Almyrida holiday is a laid back affair. Here Greek weekenders mix with foreign tourists all enjoying sun, sea and Mediterranean food.

The beaches have sun beds and parasols and if you feel like something more active there is a windsurfing school and a dive centre as well as mountain bikes to hire. These are most fun in spring and autumn when it is not so hot and you can take them out into the White Mountains that provide a dramatic backdrop to the resort.

There are many pleasant walks in the area and in spring the countryside is scattered with wild flowers. If it happens (unusually!) to rain there is always the ten pin bowling in the Almyrida Beach Hotel.

Ten minutes’ drive away, on a hillside above Souda Bay is the archaeological site of Aptera with stunning views and important Roman remains. Chania is just 15km away and its old town is a delightful place to explore. Or if you just fancy a change of coastal scene, head 4km – on foot if you are feeling energetic – to coastal n village of  Kalives.

This former day fishing resort can be a rather recent entry for the ‘resort’ category, and so shoulder-to-shoulder places to stay are notably absent. While there may well be late bargains for last minute holiday escapes, in Almyrida you’d probably be wiser to plan ahead.

The weather in Almyrida

Located on the southern coast of Crete, Almyrida gets hot dry summers, with daytime temperatures peaking at around 29 in July and August and the sun shining on average 12 hours a day. Even in May, June, September and October the daytime temperatures are still perfect for beach days. January is usually the wettest and coldest month with over 15 days of rain, and temperatures averaging around 14C.
