All Inclusive Holidays Hersonissos, just 25km from Heraklion airport on the north coast of Crete, is a former fishing village, now a buzzing resort for family holidays. Modern all-inclusive hotels and self-catering blocks back the sandy beach where there are plenty of water sports.

There is lots for everyone to do on an all inclusive Hersonissos holiday. The town boasts waterparks, a small aquarium. boat trips from the harbour and horse riding into the neighbouring mountains, as well as Crete’s only 18-hole golf course at the Crete Golf Club.

There is even a touch of culture. At the edge of town is an open-air folklore museum with a recreated traditional Cretan village and demonstrations of crafts and local music and dance. And on holidays in Hersonissos, you not far from two of Crete’s most interesting and accessible Minoan archaeological sites, Knossos and Malia (a few kilometres from the resort of the same name).

When to go to Hersonissos

All Inclusive Holidays in Hersonissos are very much a summer destination: it buzzes with activity and basks in perfect summer sunshine. Much of the resort closes for the winter, reopening in April/May when days are long and prices lower than at the height of summer.

Getting the best deal to Hersonissos

If you can travel early or late in the season, avoiding the peak summer months and school holidays, you are likely to find prices very much cheaper than in July and August.  Hersonissos has a range of accommodation, so there should be something for all budgets and booking early or late can help with finding the best offers. Airport and transfers

It is easy to get to your Hersonissos holidays. Between May and October there are direct flights taking under four hours, from Gatwick and numerous other UK cities to Heraklion (Iraklio), the Cretan capital just 25 km from Hersonissos.

Heraklion airport is not large, has few facilities and can become overcrowded in summer.  A new airport is under construction and expected to open in 2015.

Crete has a good bus service (www.bus-service-crete-ktel.com). There are regular buses from Heraklion to Hersonissos taking about forty minutes and costing €3 (under £2.50).

Taxis and hire cars are also readily available at the airport, although it is often cheaper to organise your car hire before leaving the UK. A taxi from Heraklion to Hersonissos should cost about €36 (around £29).

Beaches in Hersonissos

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and has plenty of beaches of all sorts: long strips of golden sand, hidden coves and quiet lagoons. There is something for everyone from Malia’s party beach – just along the coast from Hersonissos – and Hersonissos’ own buzzing seaside, to palm beaches and secluded bays backed by nothing but rocks and vegetation. They all have one crucial thing in common, though: the inviting, sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

There are beaches either side of Hersonissos Port. The one to the west is largest. Both are sandy beaches with plenty of sun beds and good facilities for swimming and water sports, as well as access to bars and eateries. They can be affected by wind.

Star Beach is a sandy beach with sunbeds as well as some serious activity. This is the beach attached to the family-friendly Star Beach Waterpark (open April to September). Admission is free giving access to fun pools for kids and a daily ‘foam party’ with a DJ at the main bar. There are loads of water sports too (for a fee). The more extreme amongst you, can even go bungee jumping.

Along the coast by the Silva Maris hotel are a series of tiny bays with narrow beaches. Here you can find a quieter patch for swimming, of if you fancy snorkelling head west to West Beach which is not in fact a beach but a concrete platform giving access to clear waters around the rocks.
